About 8:00 a.m., a crystalline lake surrounded by wildflowers and pines. It was going to be a hot day, so I tackled this early as the joggers and walkers skittered by. Available here: https://www.catherinetwomey.com/available

"Catawba Falls, Upper" by C. Twomey
I hiked the Catawba Falls Trail east of Asheville, trekking through a mossy, shady forest valley to a beautiful series of waterfalls on the Catawba River.
The headwaters of the Catawba River are beautifully scenic. Just east of Asheville, the river tumbles through a rolling forest, cascading in a series of waterfalls and flowing over a mossy riverbed set in a shady, scenic stretch of the Pisgah National Forest. I explored waterfall after waterfall in a sun-dappled valley, hiking just over two miles through a shady forest to the seeping wall of vibrant green moss and tendrils of water known as Catawba Falls.
Painting In Vermont During Leaf and Stick Season
It’s a wonderful time to get out into nature and hike. I shot the above image of my dog Moxie on a glorious fall day, and plan to start a painting tomorrow fueled by the beauty of Vermont.
Speaking of hiking, I recommend a new, well researched book on hiking by Jenny Hobby. It's a 5,000 word 'Ultimate Beginners Guide to Hiking' book that would be helpful for anyone looking to get started.
Feel free to check it out here: https://hobbyhelp.com/hiking/

"Dense Forest, Hillside" by Twomey
I'm inspired by nature. I live in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina - surrounded by nature and filled with wonder at the rhythms above and below the earth. This painting is a combination of an acrylic pouring technique and drawing. The suggestions of forest shapes and distance complement the swirling geology below the world above.
This work is a cracking example of a new series. I'm using a pour technique combined with drawing. First I select my palette, then I mix my colors in containers using flow medium and sometimes dymethicone. I then free flow the paints into one single cup, deciding at the same time what color goes with what for the vision in my mind. Next comes the exciting pouring of the concoction onto an archival panel. Lastly is the drawing using various implements and a lot of creativity.
Ending 5/2 at 8:00 pm! Wakefield Farm Shed With Dogwoods.
Wakefield Farm Shed With Dogwoods: Built 1781 |
First local plein air of the season, I painted this last Monday at the gorgeous Wakefield Farm. The farm is in my back yard and houses 25 horses. It was built in 1781 and has many of the original structures, including this shed.
I was taken by the beautiful aging grays of the shed's walls against the brilliant pinks, white and apricots of the flowering dogwoods. What a sight! As I painted at least five people came over for pleasant chats and comments. A day that will not soon be forgotten.
The original oil is 5X7" and is on archival linen board. The painting is unframed. This is how the painting would look framed:

Advance Mills Hay Bales 1 |
Advance Mills was an old mill town about two miles from my home. The road, Advance Mills, is one of my favorites - twisty, turny, on a ridge - the views along it are so spectacular you really have to focus to stay on it. We looked at buying some of this land, so I spent a lot of time walking it and loved catching it at sunset. You can see why. I had to work fast. The woods behind were already dripped in shadow, with sky holes poking thru. What a glorious day.
Original 6 X 8" oil on archival linen board, unframed.

My artwork has been featured at the world renowned TED (Technology, Education and Design) conference (TED MED in San Diego). I recently won the nationally acclaimed ArtInPlace competition in Virginia which placed a 12' X 24' mural on aluminum of my work, now seen by thousands of commuters daily. Two museums currently house my art: The William H. Benton Museum in Connecticut, andThe LLoyd Museum. It was a great honor to be asked to exhibit and I continue to add to their collections. Speaking of collections, my work is a part of hundreds of private collections worldwide.Fine art influencers include Georgia O'Keefe, da Vinci, Rembrandt and Degas. I look to their struggles and triumphs, and their unflinching persistence.

Huckstep's Garage Redux And Beyond
Just finished this latest rendition of Huckstep's Garage in Free Union, VA. This was commissioned by the person whose father actually made the "Huckstep's Garage" sign on the right. This iconic set of buildings just sold, and I'm hoping beyond hope they won't be razed, but rehabbed instead.
This almost brings to an end a large number of commissions I've been working on since October. There's a sea change coming as well. Meaning, I'm feeling an overwhelming need to paint in a vastly new way.
Representational is good. But of late, however, it's not been enough. Having "done" representational and accurate forever, I need to dig deeper and see what's there. There's this unavoidable need to move beyond and into a previously untapped expressiveness. That, I think, will be the next step, and as per usual, I'm gung ho to get going. Look out! No promises being made, but a deluge of energy pouring forth.

Barn Door Blue Bucket Photo
Blue Bucket Barn Door |
This was a shot from the inside of the horse barn. The glowing blue bucket; the canoe; the light - were irresistible. There is no peace like that inside a horse barn. It's the opposite of sitting all day at a computer. Organic? You bet. In a very, very good way.
There may be a painting done of this in the near future. In the meantime, prints can be purchased here:

This was the year of overflow snow and subsequent water in Yosemite, when over 14 people lost their lives trying to cross the river and falls like this one. Bear was in the air.
